Golden Milk Latte

The newest super-food in drink form..

And I’m obsessed.

I’ll admit it started on a trip to Austin, Tx – the city full of weird food and people. I love the culture there, it’s a place I’ve wanted to live for a long time. I probably never will, the traffic is horrible. But I like to visit and try new things.

I had actually gotten this in the cafe of the hotel we were staying in. I added 4 shots of espresso and paid my $15.00 thinking it was just another “something” I was trying on one of my adventures… Well I ended up paying nearly $60.00 by the end of the weekend gulping down my golden coffee every morning , just loving life. The worst part of it is is that I didn’t even think to try and make it at home until we went back again for a few days… stayed in the same hotel, paid the same price tag to make my insides happy. So after the second trip I decided to find out how to have my heavenly drink without breaking the bank account with trips to the weirdest city on earth.

After some trial and error I found a recipe that I tweaked to make it how I wanted it and it comes out to this:

Golden Milk Latte:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk of choice
  •  ½ teaspoon turmeric
  •  ¼ teaspoon ginger powder (I use ginger paste)
  •  ¼ teaspoon coconut oil
  •  1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (or more, I like one half but it leaves a LOT of spice at the end of the cup, not everyone likes that)
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup, agave syrup, or honey (I always use honey)

Optional Add-Ons

  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla
  •  dash of pepper
  •  ⅛ teaspoon cardamom
  •  ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Heat on stove top until almost boiling.
  2. Stir often.
  3. Enjoy!

The strangest thing is that I have yet to mix this with coffee. I love this stuff by itself so much now. I like my coffee black all morning and my milk golden all night.

I drink no less than two of these a night with either almond milk or whole milk. It is SO GOOD with whole milk. Like TOO GOOD with it. I would probably drink a whole gallon of it if left to my own devices. So I try to stay sane with the almond milk.

So, you may be wondering what’s so great about this drink – in case you are hesitant to try it.

Turmeric:

A spice that is becoming increasingly popular for it’s anti-inflammatory properties.

Current research is promising in the areas of Alzheimer’s disease (reducing episodes and improving memory), join pain/arthritis (including RA), inflammatory bowel disease, gum disease, upset stomach… pretty much anything that has to do with large amounts of inflammation… but there isn’t enough evidence out there for us to say that it helps, yet. They’re still researching it for a reason.

However, the best evidence for it’s effectiveness has been found to work against;

Ulcerative colitis, hay fever, depression, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis,  PMS (ladies..) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Most likely they used much higher amounts than what this recipe calls for… but a little bit goes a long way in health.

Cinnamon:

The sister inflammation fighter to turmeric.

Did you know that cinnamon comes from a tree??? It’s called a cinnamon tree. 😀

Again, more research is always needed but cinnamon shows promise with helping;

Lowering blood sugar, fighting the bacteria linked to acne, slowing the growth of tumor cells, lowering blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease, reducing inflammation (and all that comes with it), lowering cholesterol, fighting bad bacteria, yeast and regulating menstrual cycles in ladies with PCOS (again… ladies, this drink is for our goddess bods)

Ginger:

Ginger is the soothing sister and has been much better studied – it shows promise in helping with nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness and pain.

Ginger is very closely related to Turmeric (see, it’s just one big healthy family) and also helps to reduce inflammation in the body.

It helps with digestion by stimulating saliva and bile production, and suppress gastric contractions as food and fluids move through the GI tract, reliving irritation. Ginger also appears to increase motility through the digestive tract by stimulating the enzymes trypsin and pancreatic lipase.

Again, it may have many of the same effects as the other two heroes by helping to lower cholesterol, blood sugar, the risk of blood clots and to reduce pain during menstruation (again!! Ladies)

One thing I would like to point out is that ginger can actually warm the body from the inside out! It is a diaphoretic, which means that it promotes sweating, working to warm the body from within. So definitely give this recipe a try when it’s cold outside.

  1. Sold! I’m doing it this morning haha. However, I don’t have ginger powder – do you think fresh ginger might somehow work? I’m going to try to ‘steep’ it in the milk for a while before adding the other ingredients – so pumped!

    1. Definitely! Going to have a better effect than the powdered or paste (fresh is ALWAYS best). You may get a lot more of the ginger flavor but I think steeping sounds great!
